To lead is neither to pull nor to push. Workspace productivity and employees are similar to breathing. It is vital for the company to stay alive and well. When it’s working, nobody thinks about it, but when it’s forced, it can slow the operations significantly.

This means there is always a fine balance of the amount of pressure required to optimize employee efforts. Too much and the work isn’t done properly, too little and the job isn’t completed on time. Any entrepreneur who wishes to be successful must know how to fine-tune this balance, create a positive workplace atmosphere and turn around unengaged and unmotivated workers into a positive and productive workforce.

Help them outside of work

Every employee that is a part of your company also has a life outside of the workplace. They all come to work carrying their own personal issues, such as family issues, health issues, financial problems, etc. Besides this, every member of your organization is also a member of its family, group or local community. Synchronizing commitment towards their personal problems and toward your business is daunting for all of them.

It is up to you to help them deal with all these problems in any way you can, so when your employees come to work, they can focus on it entirely without worrying what awaits them after they finish it. For example, you can implement a payroll card system into your business operations, since it can give your employees a quick and easy way to access their money without them worrying about any credits they currently have.

If you employ single parents ease up on them and be understanding when they don’t have a babysitter lined up, or organize a group babysitter for them so they don’t have to worry about their most precious thing while on work. Help that college student finish their last few exams, they will have more time for your business after.

Be respectful and know that your employees have lives outside of work and you will end up with more productive and appreciative workers.

Build a family at work

Your employees have a life and family outside of work, but this doesn’t mean you can’t be all a big family at work. So, make a family-like atmosphere at the workplace. Just don’t let it become too familiar since some cold professionalism is always needed. Think in lines of cousins and nephews, not parent and children.

We all have family members who aren’t cooperative and we cannot stand being around. But still, we fervently defend when anyone mentions them in a bad light. The same can apply to your workers. Make them know that however you feel about them, you will always protect their back and go to war for them if needed. Like in special forces, every team member guards the flank of its allies and feels more secured by it.

Otherwise, you may end up with disgruntled workers and a high turnover rate, which will, in the end, cost you a fortune on recruiting, hiring and training every new worker.

Just as business suffers from stagnation, so too we all suffer when we aren’t moving and growing towards something better. A worker may lack certain knowledge and skills required to do the job in the most efficient way. Or doesn’t understand completely what is required of them. Whatever your business plan may be, make your employees understand what is exactly expected from them while on work and then give them the training needed to perform such a task. Invest in them, they’re your business biggest asset. Their increased skills will deliver greater output in the workplace, and be more up to date in this constantly changing business world. Otherwise, you may end up with a company stuck behind doing things the old way – itself no longer relevant and efficient.
